Dubai and Japan review bilateral relations

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) Director General, Mr. Khalid A bin Sulayem, and the Japanese Consul General, Mr.Hiroyasu Kobayashih, have reviewed bilateral relations between Dubai and Japan and discussed ways to strengthen the strong bonds during a meeting held at the DTCM Head Office recently.

Mr. bin Sulayem briefed the envoy about the latest developments in the emirate and the initiatives of the department to promote Dubai in overseas markets, especially in Japan where the DTCM operates a representation office in Tokyo.

Emirates Airline operates direct flights to two Japanese cities of Osaka and Nagoya. The Japanese interest in Dubai has been growing strong and there was 29 per cent increase in the Japanese guests staying at the Dubai hotels in 2005 compared with the previous year.

There was 30 per cent increase in the number of Japanese passengers passing through the Dubai International Airport. There are 14 weekly flights between Dubai and Japan.

The Japanese diplomat highlighted the efforts of the Japan government in strengthening its relations with the UAE in general and Dubai in particular. About 40 companies from Japan are established in Dubai and about 100 companies are established in the Jebel Ali free Zone area. Japan ranks among the leading trading partners with the UAE and Dubai.
