Downtown Gallery unveils interactive projection playground & interactive directory

Redefining the concept of a retail directory, Downtown Gallery's Wayfinder, is a hybrid of different technologies incorporated in a collage of twelve 55-inch monitors with an 8,000-line resolution. It is the nation's largest interactive mall directory.

SINGAPORE – OUE’s new kid on the block, Downtown Gallery, located in the CBD, the heart of the city’s financial district, will be unveiling the world’s largest interactive projection playground with a screen measuring 32 by 11 meters (350 sq m) in conjunction with their soft opening on May 19th, 2017. Filled with real time rendering of an ever-evolving surreal world, this digital art piece is aptly titled “Ponderwonderaweditto”. With a running set of algorithms, it attempts to create in real time, the motion, shapes and colors in different moods that vary everyday.

The program displays three different sequences: The first, containing three ancient Chinese classical texts is displayed across the 60 glass panels covering two floors. The second is an extravaganza of thousands of bouncing balls, exploding fireworks, giant Ferris wheels, rejuvenating cherry blossoms, and an endless rollercoaster that covers the entire facade. The third hypnagogic image covers the screen with 30,000 floating butterflies. The program is easily adapted to major local festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, etc.

As the dreamlike display is marvelled from the street along Shenton Way, the inside of Downtown Gallery is completely interactive. Multiple sensors throughout levels two and three allow the public to control the mood of the shows. Using gestural motions, customers are able to pop balloons, set off fireworks, colour trees, define the motion of swings, light the landscape, vary the speed of the circus attraction and more. The images are made up of 16,500,000 pixels, projected through 370,000 lumens of light.

Wayfinder
Redefining the concept of a retail directory, Downtown Gallery’s Wayfinder, is a hybrid of different technologies incorporated in a collage of twelve 55-inch monitors with an 8,000-line resolution. It is the nation’s largest interactive mall directory. Using data analytics such as a weather sensor and real-time lighting, this fully immersive interactive wall simultaneously reflects rain as well as accurate lightning and storms on the screen directly as it happens outside.

The Wayfinder is capable of accommodating 10 concurrent users with touch points and sensors. The backdrop of the directory is a bamboo forest where users explore through the presence of a fully organic 3-D free-moving robot living in the woodlands. Height censored floating cubes throughout the forest are activated by touch, opening a fully functioning directory display. The directory menus can be swiped and traded across the screen with multiple users.

Incorporated in the programming, a game element allows users to engage in cube-puzzle challenges. These games, puzzles and exploratory design will be developed further over time, as the design content is fully scalable.
