Cyprus takes UNWTO Commission for Europe presidency

REPORT – UNWTO GENERAL ASSEMBLY – COLOMBIA: Cyprus was elected President of UNWTO’s Commission for Europe at the World Tourism Organization’s General Assembly taking place in Cartagena des Indias, Colombia. Cyprus will preside over the Commission for the next two years till the end of 2009.

UNWTO’s Commission for Europe is consisted by 42 European countries. Many countries such as France, Russia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Malta, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Serbia, Bulgaria and more supported Cyprus candidacy. France, Austria and Bulgaria were also elected as Vice Presidents for the same period. The President of Colombia Mr. Alvaro Uribe opened the General Assembly’s works while the Secretary-General of United Nations Mr. Ban Ki-moon addressed the assembly.

Cyprus’ Presidency will be in a period where many important developments are going to take place as far as the role and programs of UNWTO are concerned.

Ms. Fivi Katsouri, General Director of the Cyprus Tourism Organization and Ms. Olga Theoharous, Tourism Officer lead Cyprus delegation at the assembly.
