Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel due to disappear by early 2013

The city centre of Kuala Lumpur will see many physical transformations over the next years with the destruction of two long-standing infrastructures: Bukit Bintang Plaza shopping centre and the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel.

KUALA LUMPUR- Malaysia’s Daily Newspaper “The Star” reported recently that property and hotel group Tradewinds Corp Bhd looks at launching a mega-project which will see the construction of a RM six-billion (US$ 1.6 billion) mixed development project called Tradewinds Centre. The new building will be located on a 2.8 hectare site which is still currently occupied by the Crowne Plaza Mutiara KL and Kompleks Antarabangsa on one of the most famous corners of Jalan Sultan Ismail, a tourist well-known business and shopping street in the heart of the city. The new infrastructure is due for completion by 2020.

Chairman Tan Sri Megat Najimuddin Megat Khas said construction would start next year and will include the demolition of both the hotel and the office complex. The Crowne Plaza will cease its operations by early next year, exactly on January 2nd, 2013. There will be compensation for unionised employees at the Crowne Plaza.

Local media also reported that Tradewinds has also expressed its interest to reports that it had expressed interest to acquire the 38-year-old Bukit Bintang Plaza (BB Plaza), which needs to be demolished in order to construct a MRT station at the place occupied by the ageing shopping mall built some 30 years ago. They are however projects to build a more glamorous version of BB Plaza, once the MRT station completed. The mall’s tenants located outside the front portion of the complex started to vacate the area while the rest of the tenants is due to go at the end of this year.
