The Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management (CNI) was honored with Hospitality Excellence Award 2010 at the China Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC) in Shanghai, China.

Mr David Ling, Chairperson of the CHIC Advisory Board said: “The CHIC Advisory Board members, comprising key members from the hospitality industry, had nominated and selected CNI as a leading organization, which is committed to the advancement of the hospitality industry. Indeed, CNI has consistently delivered best practices and excellence in its service standards. The institute’s tremendous contributions to the academic development and progress of the hospitality industry in Asia Pacific, including China, is greatly appreciated and widely recognized by the industry stakeholders.”

Dr Russell Arthur Smith, Interim Dean of CNI received the award at the conference award presentation at the Grand Ballroom, InterContinental Shanghai Puxi.

“On behalf of CNI, I am delighted to accept this Hospitality Excellence Award 2010, which recognizes and affirms our commitment and dedication in providing academic and research achievements and excellence to the hospitality industry and developing well qualified hospitality professionals through our programs. It is a great honor to be acknowledged by the hospitality industry and we like to thank you for your confidence in CNI. We look forward to working with you, our industry partners, to lift the standards of the hospitality industry to a higher in the Asia Pacific,” said Dr Smith.

Dr Smith was also a moderator for the panel discussion on “The Feasible Master Plans” at the CHIC, which is one of the most important hospitality events in Asia Pacific. The discussion theme was “The master planner has just delivered the final version of the master plan and is about to embark on the project. It is now time to hire an architect, hotel operator and consultants. How does the master planner ensure that the project has all the bells and whistles so that the plan is a financial success?”  The panel participants included:
– Lai Pak Hung, Managing Director, Davis Langdon & Seah Consultancy Shanghai
–  Francis K. Lee, Senior Director of Project Services – Greater China & Mongolia, Hilton Worldwide
– Robert Day, Vice President and Worldwide Director of Planning, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo
– Marc Kramer, Director, HVS Singapore
– Li Yao, Branch 1 Chief Architect, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.

The panel discussed the continued importance of master plans in China’s hospitality sector and highlighted the trend towards smaller scale resort developments, in keeping with the changing demand in China for more exclusive lifestyles. Such projects are forecast to have 300 or so villas, one golf course and one branded hotel as compared with past practice of up to 1,000 or more villas, two or three golf courses and a similar number of hotel properties.

The CHIC event from May 12 to 14, 2010 was organized by HVS Global Hospitality Services, one of the world’s leading consulting and services organizations focused on the hotel, restaurant, shared ownership, gaming, and leisure industries.
