China Eastern Airlines mulls out low cost option

China Eastern confirms its commitment to launch with Qantas Airways a low cost subsidiary in Hong Kong by 2013.

BEIJING- In a recent comment during the last IATA in Beijing, China Eastern Airlines Chairman Liu Shaoyong expressed its confidence to process with the establishment of a subsidiary low cost carrier in partnership with Australian national carrier Qantas Airways. The announcement was done last March with each partner investing up to US$ 99 million into the carrier. Based in Hong Kong, the new airline will carry the name of Jetstar, Qantas budget subsidiary which is already operating in Singapore, in Vietnam and soon in Japan as joint venture with local investors.

Mr. Shaoyong expressed in Beijing its confidence to ready to obtain regulatory approval for the joint venture by the end of 2012. Jetstar Hong Kong would then be able to take-off in the first half of 2013. Initial plans foresee that Jetstar Hong Kong will fly short-haul routes to China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia with a fleet of three Airbus A320. From 2015, the fleet will grow to include another 15 aircraft. Jetstar Hong Kong will be one of the first truly international low cost carrier in China.
