China Airlines and China Southern Airlines sign Memorandum of Cooperation

China Airlines and China Southern Airlines today signed a memorandum of cooperation under which the two airlines will represent each other’s businesses in passenger, cargo, maintenance, and ground handling operations. Meanwhile, China Southern will support China Airlines as it seeks to join the SkyTeam alliance.

The signing ceremony was held in Guangzhou, and the memorandum was signed by Mr. Ringo K.S. Chao, Chairman and President of China Airlines, and Mr. Shao-Yong Liu, Chairman of China Southern Airlines Company Limited. Both carriers will continually revise the details of their operations based on the new memorandum, which creates a win-win situation for passengers who travel across the strait by providing high-quality and convenient service.

Prior to signing the new memorandum, China Airlines and China Southern Airlines already had a strong partnership, working together on inter-line check-in, passenger baggage check-through, Partnership Mileage Program, and inter-line ticket issuing.

China Southern Airlines, based in Guangzhou, operates more than 330 aircraft, including passenger planes and cargo freighters, and it has the most extensive domestic air network in Mainland China. In 2007, according to the International Air Transport Association, China Southern Airlines ranked number one in Asia in annual passenger traffic volume, and ranked fourth worldwide. China Southern Airlines is a member of SkyTeam, and together with its airline partners it serves more than 840 cities in 162 countries on six continents.

As the largest airline in Taiwan, China Airlines operates the island’s most extensive and highly regarded international network of passenger and cargo services.  This new cooperation will be beneficial to both airlines, as it will expand their worldwide air networks, increase passenger and freight load factors, reduce manpower and operating costs, and enhance the competitiveness of both airlines in the global air travel market.
