Halloween is right around the corner and in honour of the spooky season, Cheapflights Ltd, the global leader in flight price search and comparison, has compiled a top ten of the world’s most haunted destinations. So if you’re in search of spooks, ditch your broomstick and search for a cheap flight to any one of these ghostly locales with Cheapflights.co.uk.

North America
Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast, Fall River, Massachusetts: Named the number one creepiest place in the world by the Travel Channel, this haunted destination is a must. In 1892, Lizzie Borden was accused of axing her parents to death and today, the doors to her home are open to the public. Sharpen your axe and sleep in the same house where the bloody bodies were found. While in Massachusetts take a trip to Salem, home to the infamous witch trials of 1692.

Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans, Louisiana: The oldest cemetery in the city boasts several ghostly apparitions and over 100,000 above-ground graves, rumoured to include the famous Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Saint Louis Cemetery is considered one of the most haunted places in America – are you brave enough?

Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado: Famous horror fiction writer Stephen King wrote ‘The Shining’ during his stay at this hotel which tops the list for every ghost hunter. The Atlantic Paranormal Society has recorded evidence of paranormal activity on the grounds. If you’re looking for the ultimate thrill stay in room 417, where King himself stayed.

France
Catacombs of Paris: The Catacombs of Paris hold the remains of about six million Parisians, piled high and set out in a romantico-macabre way. The bones of the dead were transferred here between the end of the 18th century and the middle of the 19th century due to the overcrowding of the city’s cemeteries. Visitors have reported hearing voices and strange sounds while the empty eye-sockets of the dead seem to pierce their souls. Flights from London to Paris start from £85 return.

Italy
The Coliseum, Rome: We’re all familiar with the Coliseum’s historical imprints, but few are in the know about its supernatural ones. A nightly visit to the mighty Roman amphitheatre comes complete with ghostly wanderings in the form of snorting horses, charging chariots, and clashing swords. Ladies in particular beware; resident spooks like to pull at your long hair, so tie it back or wear a hat.

Canada
Caledonia Mills, Nova Scotia: In the early years of the 20th century, the MacDonald family adopted a little girl named Mary Ellen who they discovered was possessed. In her presence, doors would open and close, strange voices were heard throughout the house and a big dog was ‘seen’ with her several times. If you visit the farm do not leave with any souvenirs – rumours are you will be the next possessed.

McBurney Park in Kingston, Ontario: The final resting place for thousands of Irish and Scottish immigrants who fled famine and poverty is also a burial ground for soldiers. More than 9,000 souls sleep beneath the city park and wander in search of their loved ones.

Germany
Heidelberg Castle: The famous University City of Heidelberg is just one hour by train direct from Frankfurt Airport.  Sitting on a beautiful hill overlooking the Neckar River, the 14th century castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times during its tumultuous history. The castle and ancient town, as well as the nearby Heiligenberg valley, were sacred to Celts, Teutons and Romans, and have many grisly legends and hair-raising hauntings in the form of hooded apparitions and shrieking sounds emanating from the castle and its grounds.

United Kingdom
Macbeth’s Castle, Angus, Scotland: Commonly referred to as the most haunted castle in Britain, Macbeth’s Castle is also the setting for Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Catch a glimpse of the ghosts by taking a tour of the gardens, castle, or play golf at the 9-hole course.

Tower of London, London: The Tower of London is said to be the city’s most haunted building. This comes as no surprise given that it served as a former fortress, palace and a prison for royalty. Its hauntings take many shapes from the annual midnight visit of the ghost of Henry VI to the White Lady whose perfume causes vomiting among the guards along with the harrowing sensation of being crushed.
