The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has welcomed Jetstar Airways as the airline start commencing operations at Changi Airport. The Australia-based carrier, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qantas Airways, operates daily flights between Singapore and Cairns via Darwin. Jetstar Airways’ operations increases the number of flights between Singapore and Darwin by 22% and between Singapore and Cairns by 40%. These flights also mark the airline’s first international operations from the two Australian cities.

A welcome ceremony was held by CAAS to celebrate the launch of Jetstar Airways’ flights to Singapore. Passengers on board the airline’s flight were warmly welcomed by the High Commissioner of Australia to Singapore, His Excellency Mr Miles Kupa, and CAAS’ Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Ho Beng Huat. On board the flight was Mr David Hall, Group General Manager (Finance), Jetstar Group, who flew in specially to celebrate the occasion.

Speaking at the welcome ceremony, Mr Ho, said, “To us at Changi Airport, Jetstar Airways represents another innovative product in the evolving air travel industry. Changi Airport already plays host to several low-cost carriers. But Jetstar Airways is a new product in between pure low-cost carriers and full service airlines. The airline’s branding as a ‘value based carrier’ is an innovative offering which includes unique products like a two-class cabin, the availability of Video-on-Demand players on board the aircraft and even through check-in for passengers and

transfer of baggage onto connecting flights.”

Mr Ho added, “At Changi Airport, we welcome more choices for travellers and another air travel experience for our passengers.”

The launch of Jetstar Airways’ new services to Singapore also comes at a time of strong growth in passenger traffic between Australia and Singapore. Over the past five years, passenger traffic on this sector registered a healthy growth of 11.6%.
