Indonesian hotels’ occupancy rate is expected to fall up to 30 per cent following bomb attacks at two Jakarta hotels, the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) said. “I think our hotel occupancy rate will fall by 20-30 per cent,” PHRI Executive Director Carla Parengkuan said here on Monday.

The bomb attacks would no doubt prompt other countries to issue travel warnings for their citizens to avoid visiting Indonesia, Parengkuan said. She said the bomb attacks posed a formidable challenge to the tourism industry, particularly restaurants and hotels in Jakarta.

Hence, she expressed hope security agencies would able to immediately uncover the perpetrators of the bomb attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in the upscale Mega Kuningan district of Jakarta last Friday.

“The tourism industry in Jakarta will be hardest hit by the impact of the bombings. The police must soon solve the case, otherwise the economy will be disrupted,” she said.

Nine people were killed and 53 others injured in the bomb blasts. The 53 injured consist of 16 foreign nationals and 37 local people.

Six of the 16 foreigners are from the United States, two from the Netherlands, two from Canada, two from South Korea, and one respectively from India, New Zealand and Norway. National Police Headquarters spokeksman Insp. Gen. Nanang Soekarna said here last Friday six people were killed on the spot at the JW Marriott Hotel and two at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, while another died at the Medistra Hospital. The police have so far questioned 35 people in connection with the bomb blasts.

On August 5, 2003, terrorists also attacked the JW Marriott Hotel killing 12 people and injuring 147 others.
