Security at all public transport locations in Bangkok –from bus stops and stations, the railways and light rail underground and Skytrain, to Suvarnabhumi airport– has been tightened, and the Transport Ministry has introduced a `Call Centre` hotline — 1356 — for reporting any act of violence which would endanger the public, officials announced Tuesday.
Enforced in response to the nine coordinated explosions that made Bangkok`s New Year`s Eve a night to remember, killed three and injured 38 persons, including nine foreigners in the first public violence to occur in the capital in decades.
Even the September 19 coup d`etat that toppled prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was absent of any violence.
Transport Minister Admiral Thira Haocharoen said he had ordered all airport, railway station, bus station, underground, skytrain and port to reinforce their security to the service-using public as travelers are returning to their homes after celebrating the New Year holidays.
Unusual packages or suspect activities should also be reported to the Ministry`s Call Centre 1356, Adm. Thira said.
Meanwhile, Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya said security at Savarnabhumi airport had been reinforced. More police, tourist police and sniffer dogs trained for recognising explosives have been posted on every floor of the airport.
Mr. Chotisak said he hoped the presence of reinforcements would give more confidence to airline passengers.
