The Boeing Company has selected Mercy Corps to receive a $1 million corporate contribution that will be used for earthquake relief efforts in South Asia.

According to Toni Bailey, vice president, Community and Education Relations, Mercy Corps was chosen after careful consideration of a number of organizations. Key reasons behind the decision include the fact that Mercy Corps had a presence in the area before the earthquake and its focus on short- as well as long-term needs.

The company also announced that employee and company contributions to the American Red Cross via The Employees Community Fund of The Boeing Company for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi totaled more than $9.3 million.

Those contributions consist of a $1 million corporate contribution, nearly $3.9 million contributed by Boeing employees and retirees, and more than $3.8 million from a company matching contribution. In addition, individual Employees Community Fund boards and committees as well as sites from across the company made nearly $650,000 in grants from their own funds to local American Red Cross and other disaster relief agencies to assist in the care of the displaced.
