Reopening Brussels’ direct access to Asia, the first flight on the new route between Brussels, Beijing and Shanghai took off fully booked from Brussels Airport. Operated by Hainan Airlines in code share partnership with SN Brussels Airlines, the new service is scheduled four times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Herman De Croo, President of the Belgian House of Representatives, Guy Verhofstadt, Belgian Prime Minister, and several regional ministers attended the inaugural ceremony together with the Chinese ambassadors to the European Union and to Belgium, as well as the management of BIAC, Hainan Airlines, SN Brussels Airlines and Virgin Express, and the passengers on this first flight.

BIAC CEO Wilfried Van Assche is very pleased with the opening of this important new direct route from Brussels Airport. “This four weekly flight is a response to a strong market demand that is growing rapidly” he said, pointing out that all 233 seats on board the first flight were sold out on the Belgian market in only five hours after the sales of tickets opened.

“Preparing this new route and negotiations took almost two full years. This case was well studied and thoroughly prepared by both Hainan Airlines and Brussels Airport. We could count on a strong support of many companies and authorities, both Chinese and Belgian, of which SN Brussels Airlines, the OPT, Club Chine, Toerisme Vlaanderen and the people at their Beijing Office, and Hainan’s sales office in Belgium” he added, extending his appreciation to the

members of the Federal and Regional governments who contributed to the start up of this new service.
