Bad weather disrupts flights in Semarang

Three airplanes on Tuesday had to cancel landing at Achmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, Central Java, and return to their base or divert their flights as a result of the inclement weather.

Three airplanes on Tuesday had to cancel landing at Achmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, Central Java, and return to their base or divert their flights as a result of the inclement weather.

The airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I said that the airplanes were a Lion Air airplane serving the Jakarta-Semarang route, a Wings Air airplane en route from Surabaya, and a Kalstar Airline airplane plying the Pangkalan Bun-Semarang route.

The airplanes were unable to land because of the heavy downpour and thick fog that limited their vision of the landing strip, said Angkasa Pura I general manager, Priyo Jatmiko.

“All flights from Semarang are able to take off according to their schedule,” he added.

Following the bad weather, the Semarang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) had alerted people to the possibility of floods across the city as the water level in the West Flood Canal is rising.

As of Tuesday, seven of the eight subdistricts in North Semarang district had been inundated due to heavy rain, said the district’s head, Djaka Sukawijana.

“Some 2,500 are affected by floods. We are still coordinating with the agency to take the necessary measures,” he said.
