Responding to the European Parliament’s plenary vote in Strasbourg on the inclusion of aviation into the EU ETS, Sylviane Lust, Director General of said:
“Today’s vote creates the worst of all worlds – even more financial pressure on airlines without any proven benefits for the environment. Policymakers have succeeded in diverting any potential investment by airlines in new fleet and technology.”
“The scheme’s starting point is wrong. By setting auctioning at 15% and the cap at 97%, it will be crippling for many airlines especially in today’s era of high fuel price and weakening demand.”
“All this results from the lack of a proper assessment on the impact of the scheme on airlines as well as on the European economy, mobility and tourism”.
“Today we have no other option but to urge Policymakers to reconsider the design for the inclusion of aviation in the context of the review of the main ETS directive.”
