ClassNK and Seatrade gathers shipping community in Singapore for Green Technologies Seminar

The event took place at the InterContinental Hotel where the local shipping community gathered to listen in on the latest green technology developments and best practices.

SINGAPORE – Leading classification society ClassNK together with Seatrade, the global publisher and events organiser, co-hosted the second Green Technologies Seminar for 136 senior executives in Singapore.

ClassNK has invested more than US$60 million in its Joint R&D for Industry programme for maritime research since 2009, and the Society plays a key role in the MPA’s Green Initiative. Noboru Ueda, ClassNK Chairman and President, is a member of the 16-strong Advisory Panel of the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) which oversees a number of projects in Singapore.

The SMI has pledged to invest up to S$100 million over a five-year period to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and related activities and to promote clean and environmentally-friendly shipping in the Republic, a powerful indication of its commitment towards green initiatives.

The presentations were wide ranging, covering topics including environmental initiatives in Singapore, ClassNK’s substantial commitment to joint industry R&D projects, fuel saving technology for marine diesel engines, use of Cloud computing technology for machinery maintenance and air lubrication technology amongst other green initiatives.

Shaj Thayil, Vice President, Technical Services & Ship Management of APL spoke on energy-saving opportunities in ship design & operations. “Now the shipping industry and we at APL have over the past couple of years focused on the environment profile, protecting the oceans, conserving energy and minimising risks. By 2015, we aim to produce only 130 grams of carbon dioxide for every teu of cargo transported per nautical mile.”
