The wholesale recovery of Phuket`s tourism industry was proved today with the disclosure of figures showing a recorded number of visitor arrivals for January this year.

Figures revealed by Capt. Boonchart Promphoon, Director of the Phuket Airport, showed that 2,936 flights arrived at the airport last month, up 12.5 percent on the same period the previous year, with 509,841 passengers.

Last year, the southern resort island`s tourism industry was plunged into crisis, as visitors stayed away due to fears over the war in Iraq, and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic.

Phuket sees an average of 30 flight arrivals each day, the majority of which are from Asia.

Charter flights to the island, which has been dubbed the `Pearl of the Sea`, are proving increasingly popular. (TNA)
