A bomb explosion has gone off at one of the leading five star hotels in Jakarta, the JW Marriott. The blast occurred around midday local time yesterday, and reports state that at least ten people have died with many others injured.
The JW Marriott`s announcement says: On August 5th at approximately 12:30 p.m. (local Jakarta time), an explosion occurred near the entrance of the JW Marriott in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The hotel was immediately evacuated and is currently closed. We are working closely with authorities and have relocated our guests to a neighboring hotel. A list of employees and registered guests staying in the hotel has been assembled, and an employee assistance center is being established on site.
We understand from local authorities that 10 people were killed by the explosion, including a security guard. Another 147 people were taken to local hospitals, including three guests and eight hotel employees. The hotel had approximately 270 guests and 642 employees. Marriott has accounted for all employees and is in the process of contacting all registered guests.

The JW Marriott`s was regarded by many as one of the most secure hotels in Jakarta, not only because it had implemented heightened security measures but also as it located in the heart of the business center which is close to the diplomatic area of Menteng, one of Jakarta`s most exclusive suburbs, and home to dozens of Western embassies and consuls, including the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia. The adjacent Rajawali building houses the embassies of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
The Marriott opened in September 2001 and has 33 floors and a total of 333 rooms.
