Beijing cancels participation to Japan travel fair

Following the row over the Diaoyu Islands (Senkaku Islands in Japan) with Japan, Chian decided to cancel its participation to a travel show hosted by JATA (Japan Association of Travel Agents).

BEIJING- China’s National Tourism Administration (NTA) has canceled a plan to attend an international travel fair in Japan. The spokesman at the administration indicated prior to last week end that the NTA called off plans to exhibit at the event held by the Japanese Association of Travel Agents, which takes place from Friday to Monday. It is one of the biggest travel and tourism events in Asia.

The decision comes after Japan’s “purchase” of China’s Diaoyu Islands on Sept. 10, which has aroused strong opposition from the Chinese government and public, with anti-Japan protests seen across the country over the past few days.

Separately in a statement issued late Friday, the administration warned of safety risks to Chinese tourists who have plans to, or are currently traveling in Japan. If their safety is being threatened, Chinese tourists should report to Japanese police and the local Chinese embassy for help, the statement said.

Japan is likely to be hurt by ongoing cancelation of travel plans from Chinese travellers to Japan. In 2011, over a million of Chinese travelled to Japan, a drop of 35% over 2010. Chinese tourists are however among the highest spenders in the country. In 2011, they spent an estimated JPY 196.4 billion (about US$ 2.43 billion) in Japan, accounting for almost a quarter of the total spending by foreign travelers, and rank as the largest spenders by country, according to data from the Japan Tourism Agency.

Chinese travelers bought relatively expensive products, such as cameras, watches and consumer electronics products, as souvenirs, according to Japanese media. Chinese consumers were followed by South Koreans and US citizens.
