Jetstar commences Singapore to Auckland service

New Zealand can expect to see more visitors from South East Asia following the commencement of flights on Jetstar‘s new Singapore to Auckland service.

The maiden flight on the airline’s new route arrived in Auckland on March 18. The route will be flown daily and will provide tens of thousands of additional seats for travellers flying between South East Asia and New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler welcomed the arrival of the new Jetstar route, saying it would boost arrivals into New Zealand from Singapore and across South East Asia.

“Visitor numbers to New Zealand from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and India have grown strongly over the past 12 months and this new service will help keep the momentum going. The competitive pricing and additional seating capacity provided by Jetstar on this route will also make accessing New Zealand easier for visitors from other Asian countries, including China.”

Jetstar Group CEO Bruce Buchanan said: “Our Singapore-Auckland daily service connects two important parts of Jetstar’s pan Asian network, allowing us to bring competition and low fares to the Singapore and Auckland market, whilst giving customers many more low fare options to access cities beyond on the Jetstar network.”

To coincide with the launch of the new route, Jetstar, Tourism New Zealand and Auckland Airport have launched a major advertising campaign in Singapore featuring local celebrity and Jetstar Ambassador Joanne Peh.

The two-month campaign was shot in New Zealand last month and will appear on television, in print, online and on the interior of MRT trains in Singapore.

In the year to January 2011, New Zealand welcomed 30,384 visitors from Singapore (up 3.1 per cent), 22,080 visitors from Malaysia (up 13.2 per cent), 21,287 visitors from Thailand (up 7.1 per cent) and 29,704 visitors from India (up 15.5 per cent).

The Jetstar service is the first of three significant new air routes into New Zealand opening in March and April.

On 1 April, Air Asia X will begin flying direct between Christchurch and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. One week later, on 8 April, China Southern Airlines will begin service on its Auckland to Guangzhou, China, route.
