UNWTO will be organizing the third International Avian and Human Influenza Simulation Exercise, for the Americas, on the 22-23 October, 2007 in Mexico City, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Tourism of the Government of Mexico. This event follows the two other successful exercises: the first in Paris in March, for the region of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and the second in Jakarta for the Asia and Pacific region in July.

The main aim of this exercise is to help build and improve contingency plans in the event of the avian flu taking a more aggressive and virulent form that will have serious consequences to the tourism industry. It is nevertheless important to note that even if, to this date, avian flu has not been a serious threat to the region, the exercise will be a constructive platform to strengthen the tourism industry preparedness in order to minimize other emergencies and crisis affecting the industry.

Though this exercise is aimed basically at the public sector, it is to be noted that private sector participation is also an integral part of it.
