Thai Prime Minister confirms no more airport closures

“I wish to assure you that there will never again be a repeat of the closure of our main gateway airports. The Cabinet has approved laws to protect our major airport from any future disruptions.” This was told by Thai Prime Minister Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva addressing the media and travel agents who were on a mega familiarization trip to Thailand recently.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Thai Airways International jointly organized a mega familiarization trip with the title “Blooming Thailand: Amazing Thailand, Amazing Value” for 450 travel agents and media from around the world from 23-26 February 2009 with the objective of reassuring travelers that Thailand is a safe destination and that is great value for money. A total of 34 travel agents and media from various cities across India were invited for the trip.

Present at the inauguration function held on the 24 February at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre, Bangkok were Thai Prime Minister Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn, TAT Governor and Thai Airways Senior Executive Vice President ACM Narongsak Sangapong.

Regarding tourists safety in Thailand, Thai Prime Minister said,”My government plans to ensure that Thailand remains a peaceful, stable and hospitable country to visit, with investment and business flowing again and tourism driven forward. It is the government’s top priority that Thailand remains a friendly and welcoming country, where the safety, security and well being of international visitors is paramount – be they leisure travelers or investors coming to do business in Thailand.”

Talking about BTS skytrain connection with Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Prime Minister said, “To facilitate tourists getting around Thailand, the airport link project will be completed this year, which will enable tourists to shuttle from the airport to Bangkok in no time; the skytrain will offer more routes and destinations. Other incentives for tourists which will be implemented shortly include: free visa fees for three months; a lowered landing charge for aircraft; and free entry for national parks.” In fact, the visa fee free period is now in effect (5 March-4 June, 2009).

Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn added that Thailand is and continues to be a wonderfully diverse tourism destination with great beaches, food, spas. hotels, nature and sports.
