Seven airports put on terror alert after intelligence warning

Seven airports put on terror alert after intelligence warning. It is feared that the attackers could even use new forms of explosives.

DELHI – There may be terror attacks on the airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Ahmedabad, intelligence agencies said issuing an alert on Sunday.

The alert, based on intercepts, says terrorists may also hijack planes from small airstrips. Following this, authorities are beefing up security at such airstrips, said an intelligence source. It is feared that the attackers could even use new forms of explosives.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which guards the airports, and other concerned agencies are put on high alert.

However, this is not the first such alert in airports. Last August too, security was tightened in airports in Ahmedabad and some other cities after Intelligence Bureau IB said Lashkar terrorists could attempt to hijack a plane. In March last year too, airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bangalore were put on alert to watch out for human bombs. In August 2011 too, security alert was issued in 12 major airports after IB inputs of impending terror attacks.
