The Cairns company was awarded for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism at the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards in Brisbane on Friday (November 28), just one week after receiving the Tropical North Queensland Tourism Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism.

A commitment to research, education and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef has earned Passions of Paradise a string of environmental awards in the past year.

The Cairns company was awarded for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism at the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards in Brisbane on Friday (November 28), just one week after receiving the Tropical North Queensland Tourism Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism.

Passions of Paradise Chief Executive Officer Scotty Garden acknowledged the work of the Passions team in committing to sustainable practices across all aspects of the Cairns business.

Since making this commitment, Passions has been awarded Ecotourism Australia’s 2013 Innovation in Ecotourism Award, been awarded Eco-Tourism Climate Leader Status and been made a partner of PADI’s 100% Project Aware,” he said.

We are privileged to work in the World Heritage area of the Great Barrier Reef and are mindful of our role as a guardian of this precious asset.

The future of the Great Barrier Reef is important not just to our locally-owned business, but to the world, so we set the goal for Passions to become a leader in sustainable tourism through research, education and conservation.

Passions contributes to a number of voluntary programs including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Eye on the Reef where our staff and passengers gather information on the health of the Reef.

We also have achieved carbon-neutral status and appointed an environmental and sustainability manager to coordinate research and training.

In 2007 Passions launched the Save A Shark Program to fund student research into sharks through the Oceania Chondrichthyan Society and we have donated $25,000 to this project.

We also raise awareness of the issues facing sharks through an on-board program for passengers.
