Lufthansa customers will in future benefit from a new, additional offer in China. Through a new partnership of the German airline with Shanghai Airlines, starting in May they can reach further destinations in China from Shanghai under Lufthansa flight numbers. That will produce advantages such as, for example, the collection of miles in the Miles & More programme. On 6th April, Zhou Chi, President of Shanghai Airlines, and Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, signed a bilateral cooperation agreement in Frankfurt. In future, the two airlines plan to operate some of their routes in code-sharing and also to work together in the area of frequent flyer programmes. The cooperation is the first of its kind between an international carrier and a Chinese domestic airline.

`We are very pleased that, in addition to our tried and tested partnership with Air China, in Shanghai Airlines we have found a further dynamic partner in China. Together we can make our customers an even more attractive offer to and from China`, said Wolfgang Mayrhuber. `We are glad to join hands with Lufthansa – one of the most outstanding aviation companies in the world. It is meaningful to fully make use of Pudong Airport as the most important aviation hub in China. At the same time, the cooperation with Lufthansa will promote the business growth of both parties and satisfy our passengers better`, said Zhou Chi.

As a result of the cooperation with Shanghai Airlines, Lufthansa is strengthening its position as the leading European carrier in the Shanghai region. Lufthansa has been successfully working with Air China since October 2000.

The cooperation will start on 1st May 2004. It will initially involve three domestic Chinese routes of Shanghai Airlines, namely from Shanghai to Beijing, Shenzhen and Qingdao. The three destinations are located in regions with high economic growth potential. Miles & More subscribers can then collect and use their bonus miles in future on these routes. Local cooperation is also planned in the Chinese market in the sales area.
