Low cost airport terminals are rapidly developing across Asia in response to rising LCC penetration rates that have crossed 10% of total traffic in many Asian markets, led by Southeast Asia. Looking ahead, LCCs have the power to grow city pair markets quite dramatically above historic levels.

“The provision of dedicated terminal infrastructure at airports in Asia is a natural response in the revolution taking place in short-haul markets in this region”, said the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation’s Executive Chairman, Peter Harbison.

“But LCCs have special needs that, unless catered for in careful design and planning, can create wasteful investment by airports. Pressures from LCCs and market liberalisation have caused airlines of all types to become more aggressive about pricing and service delivery, which is changing the game for airports”, said Mr Harbison.

A unique opportunity to work with one of the industry’s most experienced Low Cost Carrier CEOs, Tony Davis, CEO of Tiger Airways, supported by Foo Sek Min, Director (Airport Management), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, will be available in a LCC Terminal Workshop at the Airport Development 2006 conference programme, to be held in Singapore on 29 August to 2 September 2006.

“The announcement of a proposal to develop a 15-million passenger capacity LCC Terminal at the New Bangkok International Airport, following the opening of dedicated LCC facilities in Singapore and Malaysia in Mar-06 recognises the pivotal role LCCs will play in Asia’s aviation future. These moves will puts pressure on other airports right round the region, to deliver solutions to the LCC sector quickly”, said Mr Harbison.
