Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu join AirAsia network in Singapore

Despite not being an official hub for the low cost airline AirAsia, Singapore is one of the busiest station for the low cost carrier which continues to strengthen its presence with the launch of new flights to Malaysia on April 21 and 22.

SINGAPORE – AirAsia began a couple of days ago new non stop flights to Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu. The Kota Bharu service commenced on April 21 with four frequencies a week, with flights departing from Singapore at 09.10 to touch down at 10.30. Kuala Terengganu is now served three times a week with flights leaving Singapore at 09.10 and arriving at 10.35. The service started a day after the new Kota Bharu route.

While Kuala Terengganu is an important business destination due to the presence of gas fields in the area, it is also a gateway to the two resort islands of Redang and Perhentian. Perhentian can also be reached out of Kota Bharu in less than two hours drive including a high speed ferry connection. To promote the flights, the carrier offered on a limited basis free tickets earlier in the year. While Kota Bharu gains a new international connection to Singapore, it will however never see the much promised frequency to Bangkok. Malaysia Airlines low cost subsidiary Firefly has decided to pull off the launching of the new route, due to “the political situation in the Thai capital”.

AirAsia is one of the largest carriers present in Singapore despite to have no base in the city State. AirAsia Bhd (Malaysia), Indonesia AirAsia and Thai AirAsia offers flights from Singapore to 18 destinations in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The carrier offers per month close to 245,000 seats for 1,359 frequencies. Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Penang have the highest number of frequencies, representing together close to 70.5% of all available seats.
