The number of UK visitors to Korea surged during December 2008 by 14% over 2007 and arrivals for the first two weeks of January 2009 were up by 22% over the same period in 2008. Marketing activity by the Korean Tourism Organisation with partner airlines and tour operators fuelled this increase.

Michael Michael, Marketing Manager of the Korea Tourism Organisation said “This is great news and very encouraging for Korea’s prospects during a difficult period for the travel industry. Through the later part of 2008 we coupled attractive leisure fares from our partner airlines with consumer campaigns with tour operators and travel agents and this is the result. Much of this increase is in stopover traffic so our strategy of positioning Seoul as a stopover destination not just for Australasia but also for cities in Asia, is showing benefits.

Korea is also one of the few places in the world where the £ has retained its buying power against the local currency so this is a great time to visit and pick up some of those high tech bargains that Korea is famous for.”

2009 also sees Korea playing host to some major sporting and cultural events, including the World Biathlon Championships in February, The Lotus Lantern Festival in April, the World B Boy/Brake Dancing Championships in May, The World Taekwondo Expo and the World Choir Championships in July and the World Archery Championships in September. 2009 is also Visit Incheon Year and in 2010 Korea plays host to it first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix.
