Khiri Travel adds forest camping in Sri Lankan hills

Khiri Travel Sri Lanka has introduced a three-day/two-night forest hiking trip from Ohiya to Bambarakanda in the central Sri Lankan hill country.

The trip includes guides, porter and chef, making the experience accessible as well as a dining treat.

Our concept is to create a highly rewarding three-day nature experience that can be inserted into any Sri Lankan trip,” said Ruben Derksen, General Manager, Khiri Travel Sri Lanka.

The Khiri Travel CEO, Richard Brouwer, added: “The trip offers genuine community engagement at Udaveriya, is low impact throughout, and fits with the Khiri ethos of getting close to people and nature.

Like many memorable Sri Lankan journeys, it starts with a train ride. Guests take the overnight train (sleeping in a comfortable reclining chair) from Colombo through the hills of Kandy to the scenic village of Ohiya.

The next day includes 14 km of relatively rigorous trekking through tea plantation country with a mid-way reward of a prepared lunch at a quaint village house in Udaveriya. In the afternoon, guests reach Bambarakanda waterfall, the tallest in Sri Lanka at 790ft (240m).

The overnight camp site adjacent to the falls affords memorable views to Gommolliya mountain and Samanala reservoir.

Day 3 offers ample time for bathing in the natural basin of the upper Bambarakanda falls. After a short, but energetic walk through stunning scenery, guests make camp at Wangedigala for another fulsome campsite dinner.

Day 4 sees guests walk out to Bambarakanda village for onward optional trips to Sinharaja Rainforest (a UNESCO world heritage reserve), Udawalwe National Park (renowned for its herds of wild elephants), driving on to Yala National Park (which has the highest density of wild leopards in the world), or heading to Sri Lanka’s south coast to enjoy beach life on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
