Haikou prepares for increased cultural attention with opening of filming location for ‘Fang Hua’ to visitors

The grounds and facilities, a principle location of "Fang Hua" that cost HK$41.6 million to build, are now open to the public.

HAIKOU, China – China’s resort city of Haikou, a vacation paradise on the island province of Hainan, is celebrating the opening of The Courtyard of Fang Hua, the set of the epic drama “Fang Hua” by China’s renowned director Feng Xiaogang. The venue, situated in Mission Hill’s Movie Town complex, is expected to draw waves of visitors following the huge success of the movie.

The grounds and facilities, a principle location of “Fang Hua” that cost HK$41.6 million to build, are now open to the public. Visitors can enter the Courtyard of Fang Hua at the end of 1942 Street in Movie Town and experience the daily lives of dance troupe members and reminisce about their youth amongst the basketball court, training halls, and army warehouses, all as they were depicted in the movie.

Haikou sets itself apart from other tropical destinations by offering not just its natural scenic beauty, but also special cultural experiences like Movie Town, where millions of fans can reminisce about the past while walking through classic movie settings,” Liao Xiaoping, Director of the Haikou Tourism Commission said.

In Movie Town, visitors will find themselves immersed in buildings and settings from other iconic Feng Xiaogang blockbusters, including “If You Are the One“, “The Night Banquet“, “A World Without Thieves” and “Tangshan Earthquake“. People on 1942 Street, which was a set in the movie “Back To 1942“, will experience a visual feast of classical architecture from 1930s China, with most buildings modelled after structures from China’s Republican period such as Yao Lu, the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek; as well as Chongqing Cathay Theatre and Shanghai Rong Guang Theatre, each with their own historical significance and stories.

The movie theme park is also packed with interesting activities, food and accommodation choices. Visitors can engage themselves in a variety of cultural experiences, such as visiting Chinese medicine stores, martial art studios, historical photo shops and old-fashioned inns.
