First Choice’s top five hot destinations for 2011

As Britain gets to grips with the big freeze, our thoughts turn to sunnier climes and where we can go in search of some much needed sunshine. If you want to know where’s going to be hot to holiday in 2011, look no further, as First Choice has selected their top five holiday hot spots for the coming year…

1. Egypt
Why it’s hot: ‘Offering year-round sunshine, with stunning beaches, a seventh wonder of the world, plus the best diving in the world, it’s no wonder Egypt is one of our most popular destinations.’

Egypt is a big family hot spot, with many family-oriented resorts with lots to do for kids and adults alike. The culture, climate and a flight-time of just five hours makes this a great all-round destination for those after guaranteed sun, whatever time of the year.

Where to stay: This summer, First Choice is adding to its collection of popular Splash Hotels with the brand new 4 Sun Coral Sea Splash Resort based in Sharm el Sheikh. This brand new hotel has been built to spec and includes the Boomerango and the Speed Bowl slides, as well as a Flowrider – a surf simulator to practice your skills on. Use of the on-site waterpark is included in the cost of the holiday.

2. Djerba, Tunisia
Why it’s hot: ‘Up and coming on the holiday scene, Djerba offers white sandy beaches, unspolit scenery and a taste of traditional Berber life. Milder than mainland Tunisia, Djerba has an average of 300 days of sunshine per year.’

Floating just off Tunisia’s south eastern shoreline, Djerba is an up-and-coming star of the country’s holiday scene. Famously referred to as “the island of 10,000 palms”, it’s the long ribbons of ivory sand beaches that sets Djerba apart. Other historical sites include the El Ghriba synagogue, which at over 2,000 years old is one of the oldest, and most famous in the world.

Where to stay: Djerba will become a brand new destination for First Choice customers with a new programme starting from May 2011, with just over a three hour flight from both London Gatwick and Manchester. The 4 Sun Plus Hotel Riu Palace Royal Garden offers spacious and stylish accommodation set within 35 acres of fine gardens, just 200 metres from the beach. There’s a massive 2,000m² swimming pool and indoor jacuzzi, plus three themed restaurants to enjoy.

3. Porto Santo
Why it’s hot: ‘With golden sands, great weather and an away-from-it-all vibe, this tiny Portuguese isle was made for laid-back beach holidays.’

Porto Santo is set 50km northeast of Madeira. With warm weather throughout the year, Porto Santo’s biggest draw is its beaches. The volcanic sand is believed to have healing powers for aches and pains, but that’s not all that’s magical about this beautiful island. Described as ‘the last paradise in Europe’, Porto Santo also boasts a first-rate international golf course, plus the rugged coastline lends itself to walks and horse riding for the more energetic.

Where to stay: From May 2011, First Choice will be the only UK tour operators to operate direct flights to Porto Santo. Relax in luxurious surrounding at the 5 Sun Pestana Porto Santo, which comes with two lagoon pools, and plenty of sports activities as well as a choice of restaurants and bars.

4. Cuba
Why it’s hot: ‘Paradise beaches, beautiful cities steeped in history, and a latino party spirit like nowhere else, the Caribbean’s largest island promises something unforgettable.’

Famed for its exciting history and extraordinary music and dance traditions, as well as its vibrant capital city, Havana, Cuba is an exciting destination full of fun and adventure.
New for 2011 for First Choice is Cayo Santa Maria, a cluster of islands off the north coast of Cuba. Part of the Jardines del Rey Archipelago – whose name literally translates as the ‘Gardens of the King’, and has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Where to stay: The Melia Las Dunas, is in a perfect setting on the beach with four a la carte restaurants and three swimming pools. This chic hotel is bursting with activities, from yoga to water polo, and tennis to windsurfing. You can even learn a new language courtesy of the hotel’s courses!

5. Tenerife
Why it’s hot: ‘Tenerife offers true diversity and choice, from good family value, to ultimate luxury. Add to that arguably the best water-park in Europe at Siam Park and the stunning volcano of Mount Teide and you really have got a holiday spot that has it all!’

This Canary Island is a new entry to our top ten holiday hot spots, and with year-round good weather, it also offers excellent value for money. It’s also the home to one of First Choice’s newest Holiday Villages, opening in May 2011.

Where to stay for families: The new 4 Sun Plus Holiday Village Tenerife has all of the usual Holiday Village hallmarks, including a Football, Swim and Razzamataz Dance Academy, plus a high ropes course and zip wire. There’s also five restaurants, six bars, and three swimming pools to choose from.
