Changi Airport achieves record number of flights

The Northern Winter season, which commenced on 28 October 2007, has seen Singapore Changi Airport setting an all new record high of 4,300 weekly scheduled flights. This is an increase of more than 100 weekly flights compared to the Northern Summer season from 25 March 2007 to 27 October 2007.

Mr Lim Kim Choon, Director-General & Chief Operating Officer, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), said, “Leading this growth is increases in flights to South Asia and North Asia, in particular the Indian sub-continent. This is not surprising, given that India and China are Singapore’s fastest growing markets for business and tourism.”

For the first eight months of this year, passenger movements between Singapore and these two countries experienced year-on-year growth of 17.5% for India and 11.3% for China.

This Northern Winter season sees more flights from Singapore operating to three cities in India: Chennai, Bangalore and Cochin. There are also more flights added to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Fuzhou in China. In addition, there are two new destinations in Changi’s air network – Coimbatore in India and Kathmandu in Nepal. Another region with new flights from Singapore is Oceania, with additional flights to Perth, Brisbane and Auckland.

Mr Lim added, “The introduction of new passenger and cargo flights reaffirm Changi Airport’s status as a vibrant international air hub. It is also a reflection of the airline industry’s confidence in Singapore’s growth potentialfor both passenger and cargo traffic.”

There are now 83 airlines connecting Singapore to 189 cities in 60 countries.
