Brussels opens air routes to Beijing and Shanghai

The start-up of a new direct air link between Belgium and China was officially announced at Brussels Airport. The announcement was made by Mr. Zhao Zhongying, Senior Executive Vice President of the HNA Group, in the presence of HE Zhang Qiyue, the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in our country and various Belgian ministers. The announcement ceremony was attended by representatives of the many Belgian companies that maintain active trade relations with the Chinese market.

Various Belgian authorities and politicians have put in a great deal of effort to attract these Chinese flights to our country. The announcement ceremony was attended by Marc Verwilghen, Minister for Economic Affairs, Energy, Foreign Trade and Science Policy; Fientje Moerman, Vice Minister President of the Flemish Government and Geert Bourgeois, Flemish Minister of Administrative Matters, Foreign Policy, Media and Tourism.

The first flight is planned for July 2006. The flights will be operated by the Chinese company Hainan Airlines using Boeing 767-300 aircraft. These aircraft seat 34 passengers in business class and 199 passengers in economy. The Brussels – Beijing – Shanghai route is operated in both directions on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Flights departing from Brussels Airport will be evening flights.

At the announcement ceremony a cooperation agreement was signed between Hainan Airlines and the Belgian carrier SN Brussels Airlines. From now on Beijing and Shanghai are part of the network of destinations SN Brussels Airlines can offer to its clients.
