BAA plc announced that its seven UK airports will support humanitarian relief efforts following the Asian earthquake disaster, including a charitable donation of GBP 50 thousand from its charity `The Communities Trust`.

The GBP 50 thousand will be allocated to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which comprises a number of UK based charities active in the Tsunami relief efforts. The charities include, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International UK, Christian Aid, Concern, Help the Aged, MERLIN, OXFAM, Save the Children UK, Tearfund and World Vision UK.

BAA chief executive Mike Clasper said The majority of Britons affected by the Asian earthquake began their journey to the affected regions from a BAA airport. While our charity, The Communities Trust exists to assist local and global community projects. As this tragedy affects our travellers, our staff and our local communities BAA sees it as important to assist those most directly affected .

In addition to the GBP 50 thousand donation, BAA plc has waived airport charges for all specially chartered relief flights operating from any of its 7 UK airports and sited collection points in airport terminals to facilitate further donations from passengers and airport staff.

BAA`s airports are also working with airlines, handling agents and the relevant authorities to ensure those returning from affected regions receive immediate care and assistance on their arrival in the UK.
