AirAsia continues to strengthen its route network by adding new routes to Penang from its hubs in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. Direct flights to Macau from Kota Kinabalu will also take effect, all in time for the festive season.

Beginning 7th February 2007, AirAsia will operate four flights weekly to Penang from its hub in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching respectively. Daily flights to Macau from Kota Kinabalu will also commence on 6th February 2007.

The introduction of the Kuching-Penang, Kota Kinabalu-Penang and Kota Kinabalu-Macau would make AirAsia the sole operator serving these routes which have been much anticipated by the people of East Malaysia and Penang according to the company.

Kathleen Tan, Executive Vice President- Commercial, said, “The rapid expansion for our flights connecting East Malaysia to the Peninsular will help boost tourism and stimulate the growth of economic activities. The current developed market has increased demand for the two hubs to connect to Penang and we anticipate positive response for traffic both ways. We can expect increased traffic going forward for the new routes from Sabah and Sarawak as flight operations from both hubs have exceeded our expectations thus far. More people can fly between East Malaysia and Penang for short business trips and these flights will commence just in time for guests to travel for the festive season to visit relatives or take a much awaited vacation.”

“In addition to the new routes to Penang from Sabah and Sarawak, AirAsia will commence daily flights to Macau from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to further expand the hub’s international connectivity and respond to market demand. Our low fares is anticipated to attract traffic not just from Macau but also Southern China to Kota Kinabalu, as well as providing the people from East Malaysia the convenience of direct point-to-point flights to Macau. We added our 3rd frequency to Macau early last month from our Kuala Lumpur hub due to exceptionally high demand for the route. We are confident that our new daily flights to Macau from our Kota Kinabalu hub will be another winner and at the same time create new economic benefits for both countries,” concluded Kathleen.
