Perort – WTM2005: A meeting between the Asian Development Bank and NTOs from Cambodia, China (Guangxi and Yunnan provinces), Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, has identified 29 projects for development.
These include the creation of tourist attractions. The programme will particularly target negative social aspects of tourism – such as exploitation of children, women, and ethnic minorities. The aim is for tourism to reduce the absolute poverty rate by 50% in the next 10 years.
Another step is the launch of a Mekong Tourism Coordination Office, which will look at attracting investors, implementing projects, and developing promotion in foreign markets. Funded by the NTOs, the Bangkok-located MTCO should have a US$5mn basic budget for the next five years.
