Business expert: Twitter, Facebook etc are reshuffling the Hierarchy of Needs

  • In the 1940s psychologist, Abraham Maslow, devised a ranking of human needs into a pyramid, with self-actualisation at the top
  • According to networking and business expert, Penny Power, the new world of social media is redefining that hierarchy

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has been a staple of university psychology and marketing curricula for decades now.

The theory goes that humans need to take care of their very basic physical needs (like warmth, food, and shelter) before concerning themselves with the ‘higher’ things in life like cultivating a sense of community and raising their self-esteem.

According to networking expert Penny Power, however, inside online social networks the pyramid is turned on its head. She believes that self actualisation, which was at the very pinnacle of Maslow’s pyramid, is actually the place where life on social networks begins.

Power explains all in the new show, which is part of a series produced by yourBusinessChannel to coincide with the launch of her new book Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me: What Online Social Networking Means for You and Your Business.
