Witness Taiwan’s natural springtime spectacles

Taiwan earned its nickname, "Kingdom of Butterflies," thanks to the remarkable springtime migrations of these majestic creatures.

Taiwan’s outdoor beauty is on full display with brilliant springtime wonders. Experience this charming time of year with an array of special events that include one of the world’s most celebrated orchid shows, an incredible butterfly migration, and celebratory festivals honoring these spectacles of nature.

As one of only three major orchid displays in the world, Taiwan International Orchid Show takes place each spring in Tainan City. This year, the event will run from March 4 – 13 at the Taiwan Orchid Plantation, spotlighting the theme of “Discover Sustainable Orchids”. Among colorful exhibitions, the show will feature informative discussions and high-tech VR technology to educate visitors on the sustainable future of these prized flowers.

Taiwan earned its nickname, “Kingdom of Butterflies,” thanks to the remarkable springtime migrations of these majestic creatures. Maolin National Scenic Area transforms into the Purple Valley as thousands upon thousands of richly hued butterflies fly through each season. Locals honor this natural phenomenon with a series of special events including the Rukai Butterfly Conservation Market and a farewell ceremony on March 25 to bid the butterflies good luck on their journey north.

Just outside of Taipei, visitors gather each spring in Yangmingshan National Park to see the mountainous landscape in full bloom with pale pink Yoshino cherry trees, delicate azaleas and several other floral displays. Locals celebrate this season with the 38-day Yangmingshan Flower Festival, from February 10 – March 19. Events include a rare perspective of cherry blossom trees illuminated at night and special ecological and cultural tours of the Taipei Floriculture Experiment Center.
