Sriwijaya Air, an Indonesia-registered airline, was given a warm reception by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The airline, which commenced flight operations at Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 on 18 December 2008, operates 14 weekly scheduled flights between Singapore and Jakarta. With Sriwijaya Air, a total of six new airlines joined Changi’s air network last year.
There are now 11 airlines, including Sriwijaya Air, operating a total of 634 weekly scheduled flights between Singapore and 13 cities in Indonesia. “Despite the global economic downturn, air traffic between Singapore and Indonesia continued to grow last year. Total passenger movements between the two countries hit a record of over 4.1 million in 2008, registering an increase of 6.5 per cent over 2007’s passenger traffic. Indonesia remains Singapore’s largest source of visitors, accounting for nearly 20% of the total visitors to Singapore,” said CAAS’ Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Lim Kim Choon.
With the addition of Sriwijaya Air, Changi Airport is currently served by 83 scheduled airlines, operating over 4,600 weekly scheduled flights to 190 cities in 60 countries.
