Over 50 per cent of British travellers will put their health at risk this summer

Over 50 per cent of consumers will put themselves at risk in 2010 by falsely believing that the star system will protect their welfare while on holiday, according to an independent survey of over 2,000 holidaymakers by Opinion Matters.

“With the Christmas madness over, consumers are looking forward to the next big event and for many this is the annual summer holiday,” explains Mark Harrington, CEO at Check Safety First, which commissioned the research. “Historically the star rating of a hotel has had a strong influence on a booking decision, but it is evident from our research that consumers don’t fully understand what this rating means.”

Check Safety First is urging travel agents to help educate consumers that the star system, which has long been accepted as the benchmark for accommodation quality, does not cover issues of health and safety.

Harrington continues: “It is essential that travel agents help to drive home the importance of holiday safety to its customers and offer advice on accommodation that has been recognised for its standards not just facilities.”

“From a business point of view, this will not only protect the wellbeing of the traveller and increase customer loyalty, but it will also safeguard the agent’s reputation. No reputable travel company should be associated with unsafe establishments and this education drive will demonstrate a commitment to high standards.”
