Auckland Airport named Overall Winner in marketing

Auckland Airport was declared the overall winner in the regional heat of the internationally accredited Routes Airport Marketing Awards held in Adelaide, Australia, earlier this week. The awards were presented at the gala dinner of the 8th Routes Asia – the key networking event for the region’s air service development industry, which has brought together more than 450 aviation professionals.

There were five categories: Middle East, South East Asia, Oceania, China & North East Asia and Indian Sub Continent. King Fahd International Airport (Saudi Arabia) triumphed in the Middle East category. Singapore Changi International Airport (Singapore) was crowned winner of the South East Asia category, while Auckland Airport (New Zealand) scooped the prize in the Oceania category. China & North East Asia saw Incheon International Airport (South Korea) the winner, and Hyderabad International Airport (India) won the final category of Indian Sub Continent.

Matthew Findlay, Route Development Manager at Auckland International Airport, on the success: “We are delighted to win the Routes Airport Marketing Award for the Asia Pacific region, which reflects our route development achievements. Since September last year, we have had positive growth in passenger traffic; particularly the Asian market is performing strongly. We are expecting continued development of our network, as a direct result of our partnerships with our stakeholders, such as our tourism authorities, both locally and nationally, that are involved early on in our discussions with airlines.”

Auckland Airport had won over the judging panel with a very strong and professional submission reflecting its well-integrated marketing efforts, including research activities aiming to help airlines meet their marketing goals, the adoption of marketing collateral, joint ventures and a strong online presence.

As the overall winner for the Asia Pacific region, the airport will now be automatically entered into the shortlist for the Routes World Airport Marketing Awards, to be held at World Routes in Vancouver in September this year.

Voting for the Routes Asia Airport Marketing Awards started in the beginning of March and was open for two weeks. During this period airlines nominated their preferred airports on Routesonline using criteria such as the airport’s route development and marketing communications activities. The shortlisted airports then had to submit a case study to support their nominations to the judging panel.

Routes Airport Marketing Awards are deemed to be the most prestigious in the industry. This is because they are the only award based purely on rewarding excellence in route development and nominated only by airlines.
