AirAsia announced its expansion plans to develop Kota Kinabalu and Kuching airports into fully operational hubs by July 2006. AirAsia will commence daily direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Miri and Tawau starting from 11th July, and Bintulu, Sibu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu from Kuching, beginning 25th July 2006. Bookings for these new flights can be made at all AirAsia`s distribution channels from 2nd June onwards. These flights will be operated with Boeing 737-300 aircraft.

AirAsia would steadily strengthen its route network connecting Peninsular with East Malaysia by boosting flights frequencies from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. Flights from Johor to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu will be increased to twice daily (14 flights weekly), and Miri and Sibu would commence 7 times weekly operations from 3rd July onwards.

AirAsia, who has revolutionized travel to Sandakan, and Tawau by introducing direct flights to connect these cities with Kuala Lumpur, will enhance its schedule with 2 X daily flights (14 flights weekly).

AirAsia will have 4 hubs based in Malaysia following the establishment of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching as hubs in East Malaysia. The development of these 2 new hubs strategically places East Malaysia at the forefront to stimulate and encourage more travel between Peninsular, and enhances Malaysia`s connectivity that appeals to the international market, said Dato` Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of Airasia.

AirAsia will revolutionize travel to/from East Malaysia, bringing to East Malaysians a whole new travel experience which Malaysians in Peninsular have enjoyed. East Malaysians will now have access to more low cost alternatives and new routes to travel between states, and to the region. Most importantly AirAsia`s low fares will bring a positive impact to tourism and travel related industries, and further contribute to the economies of Sabah and Sarawak.

Following domestic rationalisation, the public can look forward to a seamless and affordable travel experience with enhanced connectivity and frequencies and the introduction of exciting new routes and destinations, concluded Mr. Fernandes.
