Melbourne is Australia’s most liveable city and the second most liveable city in the world next to Vancouver, according to a new survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in London.

Melbourne ranked ahead of Perth, Adelaide and Sydney which all finished in 5th place. Brisbane finished in 11th place.

“According to the survey cities such as Vancouver in Canada and Melbourne in Australia, both of which are members of the Best Cities Global Alliance, are the most ideal destinations in the world with widespread availability of goods and services, low personal risk and an effective infrastructure,” said Garry Kingshott, CEO of Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau.

The Economist Intelligence Unit`s Liveability Ranking assesses living conditions in 127 cities around the world by looking at nearly 40 individual indicators grouped into five categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure. The survey gives a rating of 0%-100% and judges a city with a lower score to be the more attractive destination. Melbourne’s ranking was 2% compared to Vancouver at 1% and Perth, Adelaide and Sydney at 3%.

“Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to live and one of the best places in the world to visit for a convention, exhibition or major event. We have the most comprehensive convention and exhibition infrastructure within our CBD of any city in Australia,” Mr Kingshott said.

“To have four Australian cities finish within the top ten ranking out of 127 cities around the world is an outstanding achievement and illustrates the attractiveness of Australian destinations,” he said.
