Singapore’s A*Star and Airbus to collaborate on research in aviation

The MoU signed between Airbus and A*STAR will facilitate collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including data analytics.

SINGAPORE – The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading aerospace company Airbus at the 3rd Aerospace Technology Leadership Forum.

The MoU signed between Airbus and A*STAR will facilitate collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including data analytics. A*STAR’s extensive capabilities in data analytics solutions can be used for a wide array of applications, including more accurate prediction of flight arrival times to reduce passenger delays, which will translate to significant savings for the aviation industry.

“We are proud to be teaming up with A*STAR, a world leading research organisation based in Singapore. We will channel the power of Big Data Analytics to faster develop incremental innovations for our market leading aircraft and services – and with greater agility,” said Mr. Axel Krein, Airbus SVP Research & Technology. “Using the very latest developments in this exciting new technology field, we expect to be able to offer our customers new ways to reduce their fuel consumption through speedier, more effective analysis of their operational data.”

Mr. Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STAR, said, “We are pleased to welcome Airbus as our latest partner on collaboration. Through this agreement, Airbus would be able to harness R&D capabilities and expertise across our Science and Engineering Research Institutes in order to address new developments in the aviation industry. This partnership is reflective of how the public and private sectors are synergistically working together under an open innovation framework to position Singapore as an Aviation Innovation Hub to better serve the growing Asian market and beyond.”

Aerospace Technology Leadership Forum 2014

The MoU was signed at the A*STAR Aerospace Technology Leadership forum, a biennial event that  serves as a platform for aviation industry players to exchange innovative ideas  for the next leap in aviation, address industry challenges, and discuss growth and opportunities in Asia.

The forum this year focused on overcoming technological impediments for further advancement in aviation, and discussed the balance between adopting new technology and management of risks. Speakers and panel moderators comprised members of the A*STAR Aerospace Programme, including Boeing, Bombardier, DSTA, Embraer, Hexcel, Honeywell, GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, SAFRAN, SIA Engineering, and ST Aerospace.
