Qatar Airways has stepped up frequency on its highly-popular Doha – Shanghai route with the introduction of a fourth weekly scheduled flight.

The extra flight operates to Shanghai every Thursday night from Doha, returning to the Qatari capital early Saturday morning.

The Doha – Shanghai flights operate non-stop using an Airbus A330-200. Strong business links between the Middle East and China – both the capital Beijing and commercial centre of Shanghai – have prompted Qatar Airways to increase capacity.

With the addition in November 2004 of the four-times-a-week Beijing service, Qatar Airways has gradually expanded its presence in the Chinese market.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said the Shanghai route had performed exceptionally well since its launch two years ago.

“Everyone is familiar with the importance of the Chinese market as the economy is growing at a phenomenal rate,” he said.

“Economic indicators clearly show that China is on a steep growth curve and travel, both inbound and outbound, is rising at an incredible rate. Like any commercial organisation, Qatar Airways wants to be part of the China success story, and are pleased to be able to offer the travelling public a wider range of flying opportunities to an from China.”

Added Al Baker: “We are also excited to launch our new daily Hong Kong flights on March 26 which will cement our position further as a key international player in the Greater China market.”

From March 26, Qatar Airways will operate a total of 15 scheduled flights a week between Doha and Greater China – four each to Beijing and Shanghai, and the new daily Hong Kong service.
