The Department of Medical Sciences is extending its food safety inspection programmes to include 10 key tourist provinces as part of the government’s bid to prove food standards in Thailand to be equal to those of developed nations, the department’s Director-General, Dr. Paijit Warachit, announced.

Dr. Paijit said that strict inspections would be carried out in Chiang Rai, Petchabun, Kampaengpetch, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Nongkai, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Trang and Yala Provinces, with the programme kicking off in Surin.

Last year the department launched a range of stringent food safety inspection measures in Phuket, Surat Thani and Chiang Mai, while providing hygiene training for food producers and restaurateurs.

Food stalls and restaurants which pass the department’s inspections are allowed to display the ‘food safety’ sign.

Dr. Paijit noted that the programme would serve to boost the confidence of locals and tourists alike, and would support the government’s bid to promote tourism.
