The number of foreign tourists visiting Bali in January 2005 reached 101,508, while their number reached 104,052 in the same period of 2003.

Head of the provincial immigration office at the Ngurah Rai Airport, M. Zailani told ANTARA here Friday that the earthquake and tsunami which hit the Southeast and South Asian regions had affected the enthusiasm of foreign tourists to come to the island paradise.

However, Japan was still recorded as the highest supplier of tourists to the province with 27,425 persons, followed by Australia 19,455 and Taiwan 8,116, he said.

While some foreign countries had issued travel warnings to their citizens to visit the Indonesia, the number of British tourists to Bali reached 4,953, Americans 3,396, South Koreans 5,007, Malaysians 4,570 and Russians 1,104.

Some local tourism agents have made some efforts to encourage foreign tourists to visit the country, Bali in particular, he said.

There are sitll many tourist sites in Bali which could be enjoyed by foreign tourists as the province is far away from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD and Nias island in North Sumatera which were recently hit by tsunamis, he added.
