REPORT – ATF 2012 – MANADO, INDONESIA: ASEAN Green Hotel Award is an accolade ceremony held by the ASEAN Member States, as an appreciation to those who run the hotel business, operated in environmentally friendly principles.
The Green Award is held every 2 years; and the third time of this award ceremony is now taking place on 11 January 2012 in Manado, South Sulawesi. The first ASEAN Green Hotel Award was held in Thailand in 2008; and in 2010, Brunei Darussalam became the host country to hold the award.
The principles of environmentally friendly is the requirements of the judgement, as stipulated in the document that notions the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard, which has been agreed by all the ASEAN Member States since it was first drafted in 2007. It covers major criteria and requirements as follows:
- Environmental policy and activities for hotel operation
- Use of green products
- Collaboration with the communities and local organizations
- Human resources development
- Solid waste management
- Energy efficiency
- Water efficiency
- Air quality management (indoor and outdoor)
- Noise pollution control
- Waste water treatment and management
- Toxic and chemical substance disposal management
The tight competition in the hotel industry becomes the push factor on the creation of Green Hotel Standard. Thus, some of the advantages of this award are:
- To improve the awareness of those who run the hotel business in concerning of the nature against the global warming
- To improve the competitiveness of the hotel industry in gaining more guests
- To improve the quality of the hotels in ASEAN countries so as to support ASEAN as a single tourism destination.
Each of the ASEAN Member States is given a chance to propose ten (10) of its hotels to honor the ASEAN Green Hotel Award 2012. The following table shows the number of the hotels proposed as follows:

- Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, Bali
- Holiday Inn Resort, Batam
- Angsana Bintan
- Melia Benoa Bali
- Losari Spa Retreat & Coffee Plantation
- The St. Regis Bali Resort
- Melia Bali Villa & Spa Resort
- The Dharmawangsa Jakarta
- Hotel Gran Melia Jakarta.
