1888, a new hotel brand in Sydney

1888 is a brand new hotel opened by 8Hotels Boutique Hotel Company just a few weeks ago. It has already proved to be one of the most unique boutique properties in Sydney and the one property that truly reflects 8Hotels’ culture, style and expression.

SYDNEY – 1888 Hotel is the end product of years of inspiration and so many lessons learned in the hotel industry.

The building was originally a wool store and factory constructed in the year 1888. To this day it bears its original 1888 signage – still visible from the street. Coincidently the name bears the lucky number 8, also present in 8Hotels.

It took 12 months and a $30 million investment to transform the old property into a comfortable and trendy boutique hotel space. Only a few weeks after its launch, 1888 is already ranked on the top 5 (out of 187) property in Sydney by TripAdvisor.

Aside from the exposed brick, a majority of rooms include furniture by renowned designer Tom Dixon and a custom-made desk using the reclaimed wood from the original foundation of the wool factory. The mix of modern furniture with raw wood & exposed brick walls give an industrial chic style to the overall design of the hotel.

All prints displayed throughout the property come from local Sydney artists & studios. Guests can spot hints of Australian culture such as a Nick Cave’s drawing in the corridor or maps of the Pyrmont neighbourhood in the lobby.

Pyrmont is an inner-city suburb in Sydney that was once a thriving part of colonial Sydney. Located near the harbour and by the Sydney Convention centre, The Pyrmont area caters to both leisure guests as well as business travellers looking for convenience and comfort on the rim of the city.

Guests often use Instagram when staying in a hotel and visiting a new city, so 8Hotels made it more enjoyable for them to do so. Each month, guests who take the best Instagram picture with #1888hotel wins an additional night’s stay. Plus, all Instagram users with over 10,000 followers get a free night at the hotel.  Finally, all hotel guests are invited to go on a ‘Insta-walk’ at their leisure; a map of local places and landmarks that are perfect for capturing through an Instagram lens.
