Applications for ‘Best Jobs In The World’ close midday 10 April 2013

Each job comes with a AUD $100,000 package (approximately £67,000) for six months work, $50,000 of which is a paid salary.

Tourism Australia’s ‘Best Jobs in the World’ recruitment drive has been so successful that over 500,000 applications have been lodged by people from 196 countries. Over 81,000 of these applications have come from Brits. Those hoping to bag one of the six jobs have until midday today (10 April 2013) to register their interest at www.australia.com/bestjobs and upload their 30 second application video.

Each job comes with a AUD $100,000 package (approximately £67,000) for six months work, $50,000 of which is a paid salary. The six roles are all very different. See below for details of what the successful applicants might find themselves doing when they start work.

A day in the life of the…

Chief Funster – Sydney & New South Wales
Working for Destination NSW, the Chief Funster will be based in Sydney, travelling the State as social media commentator, appearing at all the major tourism launches, media events and selected festivals and major events, reporting on what’s happening and how visitors can plan their trip to New South Wales to take advantage of the State’s incredible events calendar. Tasks may include:

  • Scouting for live bands at Oxford Art Factory for VIVID Live with VIVID Creative Director Fergus Linehan
  • Meeting local surf photographer and blogger Eugene Tan from Aquabumps, and working with him on his shots and daily blog
  • Working with the team backstage at the Sydney Opera House.

Park Ranger – Queensland
The Park Ranger in Queensland will work alongside experienced guides and tourism operators to showcase Queensland’s best natural assets to the world.  Key tasks include (but are not limited to):

  • Patrolling the beaches – Queensland has over 7,400km of coastline
  • Getting to know the locals who live amongst the ancient rainforests – from kangaroos to turtles, crocodiles to cassowaries
  • Swimming, diving and snorkelling the world’s largest aquarium and checking the water temperature for more than 1,500 species of marine life on the Great Barrier Reef.

Taste Master – Perth & Western Australia
Working for Tourism Western Australia, the Taste Master will be based in Perth, but will also travel across the state as a food and wine blogger, from the Mediterranean south – famous for its boutique wineries, to the tropical north. They will forage out the finest produce from bush tucker to black truffles and review Western Australia’s best bars, restaurants and cafes. Tasks may include:

  • Diving for lobster off the Abrolhos Islands, home to pristine coral reefs and incredible marine life
  • Learning how to make beer at Matso’s microbrewery in the tropical town of Broome, working alongside master brewer, Marcus Mueller, crafting their famous alcoholic Mango and Ginger beers
  • Going on assignment to some of WA’s best events such as the Margaret River Gourmet Escape, to interview world-famous chefs and local producers over three days of tastings, talks and spectacular beach barbecues.

Outback Adventurer – Northern Territory
The Outback Adventurer will explore the Northern Territory on foot, by car and by train seeking out top adventures and activities for holidaymakers.  They’ll share their experiences with the world through blogs, video and imagery as they hunt down the very best of what the Outback has to offer.  Key tasks may include:

  • Uncovering amazing adventures, from quad biking through sand dunes to soaring across landscapes in a hot air balloon
  • Meeting the locals and learning about the ancient indigenous culture, admiring dramatic artworks and tasting traditional bush foods
  • Getting up close to nature, admiring the beauty of the iconic Uluru at sunrise and sleeping in a swag under the stars.

Wildlife Caretaker – South Australia
South Australia’s Wildlife Caretaker, whilst predominantly based on Kangaroo Island, will have plenty of opportunity to explore other regions of the State like the Eyre Peninsula, renowned as an aquatic playground teeming with sea life. Tasks will include:

  • Protecting Kangaroo Island’s native wildlife – the koalas, kangaroos, cockatoos and seals
  • Observing the progress of migrating southern right whales on the Great Australian Bight
  • Swimming and diving in the Southern Ocean, off the Eyre Peninsula, keeping tabs on the local sea lions, dolphins and leafy sea dragons.

Lifestyle Photographer – Melbourne
Working for Time Out Melbourne, the Lifestyle Photographer will work as a photojournalist producing travel photography, video content and writing features that capture the essence of Melbourne and Victoria. The job will involve exploring Melbourne’s vibrant festivals, music events, cool cafes, hidden rooftop bars, cultural pursuits and life beyond the city. This exciting role will include:

  • Creating online reviews, previews and listings for the Time Out Melbourne website covering off the latest lifestyle news on cafes, boutiques, markets and bars
  • Attending Time Out Melbourne’s high profile events and parties and generating coverage as a result
  • Participating in regional photo-shoots that cover distinctive tourism experiences which help inspire travellers to visit Melbourne and Victoria, such as surfing on the Great Ocean Road, abseiling Mount Arapiles, researching little penguins at Phillip Island or winemaking at a leading winery.
